Many of the paintings Ted Geisel created in the 1930s and 40s use an artistic element derived from his most successful work as a commercial illustrator. This period, known as Geisel’s “Deco Period,” refers to his instinctive use of saturated black backgrounds, combined with Art Deco elements often found within the architecture of Seuss’s artworks.
The anticipation of romance awaits us all. What begins as a lone “Stag” journey to the watering hole becomes something magical when Seuss surrounds his creature with Dali-esque, Deco-inspired architecture that promises a love connection over the horizon for us all.

If you have ever fallen in love, you understand the thrill surrounding the early moments of any romantic relationship. The anticipation and excitement of the unknown swirls in the air and sends those involved eagerly into the intimate ritual of courtship.
Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, lays bare those very moments in this lush, surreal painting from the 1930’s. Mystery abounds as his Antlered Animal cautiously approaches the Pink Tufted Small Beast with an earnest eye and wide smile. The Small Beast, filled with the same anticipation, is perched atop an impossibly precarious tower, further alluding to the tension that fuels such moments.

This quintessential story begins with the Stag, alone at the watering hole in search of companionship. Ted then reveals the magical moment of connection, that unexpected discovery of what might be when we fall in love. The Stag at Eve and Antlered Animal Adoring Pink-Tufted Small Beast are perfectly paired together in this rare opportunity.

Many writers often start out as avid readers. Ted was an avid reader who struggled through weekly piano lessons to be able to “win” the book of his choice at Johnson’s Book Store. This was a bargain he struck with his mother who, a pianist herself, believed in the power of music to enrich one’s life. If Ted did well, he was allowed to choose a book after class. These efforts paid off and in high school Ted learned to play both the mandolin and the banjo. Not only did he organize the Mandolin Club, his yearbook reported that he gave mandolin and banjo performances at class assemblies.
It is no surprise then that Ted would incorporate musical instruments into many of his artworks, from Secret Art and Archive paintings to images from his most iconic children’s books.

A celebration of the moments we share together with the ones we hold most dear, Love and Music captures the delight of being in love and at peace. Ted painted this piece while living with the one he loved most, together in the home of his dreams. The Geisel’s Southern California oasis was a realization of Ted’s desire to live somewhere he could “walk around outside in his pajamas,” much like the serene, pajama-clad character depicted here. The exotic sitar-like instrument likely was inspired by his many global excursions, including India, where Audrey was always by his side.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to his family and friends as “Ted,” was a romantic in many ways, often crafting paintings and drawings that tap into our ongoing quest and desire for romance. Here, a wistful stag allows a pair of woodpeckers to safely court atop his antlers. There is a sense of pride in providing such sanctuary for these lovebirds, although one can’t help but sense a longing for the stag’s own sweetheart, perhaps a doe named Emma?

Falling in love is much like swinging on a trapeze high above the ground. It requires “perfect timing.” It asks us to take a risk and be daring. It begs us to trust. And above all, it asks us to commit gracefully and with an ease that pulls us together in a high-flying choreography that continues to exhilarate.

Adapted posthumously from the gouache on board created for the 1959 book, Happy Birthday To You!
Dr. Seuss created three extraordinary books that stand out artistically from his famous color filled pen-and-ink line drawings. The Seven Lady Godivas (1939), McElligot’s Pool (1947), and Happy Birthday To You! (1959) all are comprised of elaborate artworks reminiscent of the “Midnight Paintings” he did privately for his own pleasure. In Happy Birthday To You! perhaps the most elaborate painting appears when the text transports the reader into the “Birthday Flower Jungle,” where they come face-to-face with A Plethora of Flowers.
Dr. Seuss created three extraordinary books that stand out artistically from his famous color filled pen-and-ink line drawings. Much like the elaborate paintings found in the Secret Art Collection, these works are lush with depth and wonder. A Plethora of Flowers is a quintessential example - a jungle of flowers envelope the scene, an overflowing bouquet ready to burst from the painting’s edges. The Summer of Love is a celebration of our most vital relationships, and this incredible symphony of Seussian flowers seems to capture it all.
